Innovative Cell Therapy Discovered by Chinese Scientists Offers Hope for a Diabetes Cure

Researchers in China have announced a possible cell therapy cure, which is a positive discovery for millions of people suffering from diabetes. According to the sources, the 59-year-old man with type 2 diabetes received successful therapy.

In July 2021, the patient—who had been fighting the illness for 25 years and needed insulin shots every day—received a novel cell transplant. The process entailed growing in the lab duplicates of the pancreatic islet cells that produce insulin, which were subsequently inserted into the patient. The therapy was really effective. The patient no longer needed exogenous insulin after eleven weeks. He reduced and eventually discontinued taking oral medicine for blood sugar control over the course of the next year. The patient’s pancreatic islet cells were found to be functioning normally during follow-up exams, which allowed him to go more than 33 months without taking any medication.

Despite being a case study involving only one patient, experts consider it to be a major advancement in diabetes cell therapy. The University of British Columbia’s Professor Timothy Kieffer described it as “an important advance in the field.” Before the method may be applied as a treatment, more extensive trials are required to verify its efficacy and safety.

Millions of patients suffering from diabetes will recover by using cell therapy in the future. Although more research is required, the positive results of the cell therapy trial may pave the way for a day without the illness.
